Necessity really IS the mother of invention…as noted when Dika goes for an all-new look.

A tale from ancient history, compiled from the writings of a Greek poet and her friend. But in “The House of the Muses,” you’ll read it through the modern media we know as the Graphic Novel. And the poet is Sappho, so it’s no surprise that passion is as omnipresent as the power politics of slave ownership and family intrigues. House of the Muses: The Latter Days of Sappho of Lesbos introduces us to Mnasidika of Sparta, a girl with a stolen destiny, and how she made her journey to Lesbos. At the end of her adventures, she would write the one poem that the legendary Poetess of Mytilene would safeguard among her treasured works forever.

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know by now that one of my favorite mantras is “Do what you love and use it to fight human trafficking.” That’s one of the reasons I get excited to feature real, creative people who are baking pies, giving pilates classes, and otherwise using their unique skills and interests to contribute to ending slavery around the world. Lora Innes, creator of webcomic The Dreamer, is one of those people.
She didn’t start out as an expert, but she did know two things: that she was a talented comic artist with a lot of talented artist friends, and that she wanted to make a difference in the fight against human trafficking in her hometown of Columbus, OH. And from her passion and inspiration, the Comic Creators Alliance was born.
The Comic Creators Alliance was Innes’ answer to the question, “What can I do to end human trafficking?” Innes first heard about human trafficking at a local event, but it was after a young girl she was mentoring was almost abducted at a bus stop near her house that the issue really hit home. Innes became determined to use her talents to raise funds for organizations which help girls who, unlike her mentee, weren’t able to escape trafficking.

Monday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To participate, we formed the Comic Creator’s Alliance–a group of over eighty comic book creators (both web and print) who volunteered our artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the 19th century, what is happening today is happening in secret. So it won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.
So here’s what we did: each creator contributed an original drawing of one of our own female characters, and combined them into a single wallpaper image. The wallpaper features characters from The Phoenix Requiem, Girls with Slingshots, House of the Muses, Earthsong, Looking for Group, Shadowgirls, Marsh Rocket, The Uniques and three IDW Publishing titles: Fallen Angel, The Dreamland Chronicles and The Dreamer, and lots, lots more! Donate today to download this unique, once-in-a-lifetime wallpaper. The Donations Drive will last for two weeks, from January 11th – 24th. All proceeds will be split evenly between Love146 and Gracehaven House- two organizations working on rehabilitation of victims and prevention of this crime.Amazon.com US • Amazon.co.uk • Amazon Canada • Amazon France • Amazon.de • Amazon Japan • Bol.com/nl • Booktopia.com.au • Flipkart.com (India) • TLA Video.com
