A tale from ancient history, compiled from the writings of a Greek poet and her friend. But in “The House of the Muses,” you’ll read it through the modern media we know as the Graphic Novel. And the poet is Sappho, so it’s no surprise that passion is as omnipresent as the power politics of slave ownership and family intrigues. House of the Muses: The Latter Days of Sappho of Lesbos introduces us to Mnasidika of Sparta, a girl with a stolen destiny, and how she made her journey to Lesbos. At the end of her adventures, she would write the one poem that the legendary Poetess of Mytilene would safeguard among her treasured works forever.

House of the Muses #6 goes live February 16, 2010! Take advantage of the handy subscribe feature on my website to catch the premiere. I do not send out spam emails because that would fudge my readership, and I love y’all too much for that.
Be there! February 16th! A new adventure begins!!!
Oh…heh…one last freaking teaser. Gorgo is going off on Sappho, but why is in the book. It’s at the printer’s now, and will be available soon. Meantime, you can advance purchase autographed copies until they go onsale at IndyPlanet.com.
This is the beginning of the legendary smear campaign by Andromeda and Gorgo to destroy Sappho. Many of the accusations they made against the poetess were incriminating by any standard, and the citizens of Mytilene had a lot to speculate about. What, after all this time, is handed down as truth, and what is actually lies? Stay tuned, and you’ll find out. See you in two weeks.
One of the ads to be featured in House of the Muses #5 for my readers. Will be adding a page later today for all of you: I’m now accepting preorders! Everyone who purchases a pre-order copy directly from me gets an autographed copy of House of the Muses #5.
Last teaser. Sappho’s stance in the panel…says it all. Her past is come back to haunt her.
This thing is off to print at Ka-Blam.com, and should be on sale shortly. Moving after the Christmas holidays was hard on us, and there’s been so much more to do on my end. I previewed this panel on Twitter yesterday and the approval was unanimous.
Big excitement from a lot of my fans, as I’m wrapping up #5 and on my way to #6. The next four books will be really dramatic…then it’s a wrap. Some were asking if there would be more stories after House of the Muses wraps up. You have NO idea how many old stories and manuscripts I found while we were moving over the holidays…..there will be more. In the meantime, we’re just getting started! Next time you see me will be the premiere of House of the Muses #6 – Last Child of Herakles!
For anyone who may have thought the ending of House of the Muses #4 was the end of the friendship between Hero and Dika, think again. Our tomboyish ally lets Dika know–by gestures, if not with words–that she’ll always be there for her.
HEY! On a real left-tangent, I keep reading on Google according to some searches for “Sappho-Dika” on my site, a number of claims : “The Late Review: “we live / the opposite / daring” May 9, 2008 … The word ‘dyke’ is also of Greek origin, and comes from Dika / Δίκα, one of Sappho’s most favoured pupils. And if I remember correctly, …”
I want you all to know that this irritates the hell out of me, after all my studies of the Greek language as well as the story I’m writing. The name Δίκα is pronounced “DEE-ka,” not “Dyke-a” and means “Justice” not…whatever…..people who have no knowledge of the language are seizing on a similarity and claiming this to be origin of modern terms….I’m off my soapbox now.

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know by now that one of my favorite mantras is “Do what you love and use it to fight human trafficking.” That’s one of the reasons I get excited to feature real, creative people who are baking pies, giving pilates classes, and otherwise using their unique skills and interests to contribute to ending slavery around the world. Lora Innes, creator of webcomic The Dreamer, is one of those people.
She didn’t start out as an expert, but she did know two things: that she was a talented comic artist with a lot of talented artist friends, and that she wanted to make a difference in the fight against human trafficking in her hometown of Columbus, OH. And from her passion and inspiration, the Comic Creators Alliance was born.
The Comic Creators Alliance was Innes’ answer to the question, “What can I do to end human trafficking?” Innes first heard about human trafficking at a local event, but it was after a young girl she was mentoring was almost abducted at a bus stop near her house that the issue really hit home. Innes became determined to use her talents to raise funds for organizations which help girls who, unlike her mentee, weren’t able to escape trafficking.

Two cliffhangers down, and Dika is trying to come to grips with her unwanted pregnancy. The young oracle is visited by an old dear friend who can give her own perspective on the problem.
Think about me today, folks. Got lots going on, will post news on it as soon as I find out, win or lose.

What happens to a girl with a stolen destiny on her journey to Lesbos? The House of the Muses is a powerful miniseries that explores one possibility behind the 2,500-year-old poems of Sappho.
Pam Harrison is the creator, author, and illustrator of the ground-breaking LGBT miniseries that illuminates the latter days of Sappho of Lesbos for the first time ever in a Teen+ format. With House of the Muses #5: House of Many Kings, Harrison is welcoming the arrival of the fifth book in her nine-issue series. The latest book will launch on IndyPlanet.com for $6.50 on January 15, and will shortly be available for order to comic shops through ComicsMonkey.com.
In House of the Muses #5, an unexpected guest makes a visit to the House of the Muses. Gorgo of the House of Penthilos tells Sappho that she has opened a school for girls of her own in the city of Mytilene, with Andromeda, the daughter of Pittakos, as headmistress. Sappho tries not to appear upset by the news and it seems to anger Gorgo. The woman tells Sappho to remember that her reputation is fragile, and how interesting would it be if the people of Mytilene were reminded of her part in the assassination of the tyrant Myrsilos so many years ago. Sappho orders Gorgo to leave, but the damage has already been done. Dika later convinces Sappho to talk about the past, and readers learn things about the Poetess of Mytilene that they didn’t know.
Awarded the 2008 Prism Comics Queer Press Grant Award in March, 2009, The House of the Muses is a critically acclaimed series that examines universal themes deeply linked to the human condition. House of the Muses has gained an online following that crosses the barriers of sexual orientation and cuts to the quick of significant questions that mystify the human heart.
Pam Harrison is an award winning graphic novelist with more than twenty years experience in the industry. Pam was born in Hammond, Indiana and studied Fine Arts at Western Kentucky University. The idea for House of the Muses was conceived during her college career.
Learn more about the series at http://houseofthemuses.com/graphicnovel. (The third, fourth and fifth books in the series will soon be followed by their popular paperback version for $19.95 through Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com, both domestic and international.)
Comic Creator’s Alliance: Monday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Monday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To participate, we formed the Comic Creator’s Alliance–a group of over eighty comic book creators (both web and print) who volunteered our artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the 19th century, what is happening today is happening in secret. So it won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.
So here’s what we did: each creator contributed an original drawing of one of our own female characters, and combined them into a single wallpaper image. The wallpaper features characters from The Phoenix Requiem, Girls with Slingshots, House of the Muses, Earthsong, Looking for Group, Shadowgirls, Marsh Rocket, The Uniques and three IDW Publishing titles: Fallen Angel, The Dreamland Chronicles and The Dreamer, and lots, lots more! Donate today to download this unique, once-in-a-lifetime wallpaper. The Donations Drive will last for two weeks, from January 11th – 24th. All proceeds will be split evenly between Love146 and Gracehaven House- two organizations working on rehabilitation of victims and prevention of this crime.
