| The very classy artwork and cgi techniques used in making this set of graphic novels bring the characters to life in a way that no ordinary written text book could do so easily. Pamela Harrison’s ability to take such a complex story and make it so palatable without losing any of the drama or excitement of the original writings is a real feather in her cap. She creates great atmosphere and tension in her storytelling and the book is packed with fascinating historical facts for the reader to immerse themselves in. It is more heavyweight than most graphic novels I have ever read as the stories are deeply interwoven with history so I would say these books would suit older readers from student age and upwards better.
The main story itself reads like a very early high class soap opera with smaller sideline stories threaded neatly throughout. Full of drama, romance, intrigue, mystery, murder and suspense and covering a wide range of themes and emotions, there really is something here for everyone. A very absorbing series for anyone who likes the intricacies of relationships and the tension and complexities that love can bring, together with the added complexities of being sexually different as well, but also an absolute must for anyone who is fascinated by and wants to know more about the lifestyle and events of this period in greek history.
The settings and costumes have been painstakingly researched to give authenticity to the stories, and allows the reader to slide effortlessly back in time to get a very real feel of the splendour and atmosphere of what it must have been like to live in Greece during those times. An extremely worthwhile series and a set to be treasured by anyone interested in ancient history and
greek mythology and also no doubt of special interest to anyone who is interested in the history of lesbianism in society and the roots of it’s terminology. An amazing feat of graphic comic work!
